Captisol® Enables Product Development

The advanced drug formulation technology of CyDex, Captisol®, is based on a modified cyclodextrin molecule that enables creation of new products by significantly improving the solubility, stability, bioavailablity, safety and dosing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Captisol® is one of a series of anionically charged sulfobutyl ether β-cyclodextrins (SBE-CDs) that were originally synthesized and patented by scientists from the University of Kansas Higuchi Biosciences Center for Drug Delivery Research.

Two Captisol-enabled® drugs, Vfend I.V. and Zeldox/Geodon for Injection, have been brought to market in the US and EU by Pfizer Inc., a CyDex corporate partner. Pfizer also recently received approval for Vfend I.V. in Japan. The safety and other characteristics of Captisol® have been well profiled and are described in a Drug Master File (DMF) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

CyDex works worldwide with companies interested in licensing Captisol® and other SBE-CD technologies. A Starter Kit of Captisol® is available upon the execution of a confidentiality agreement. Additional supplies can be purchased directly from CyDex. Please contact us via email.
